[00:00:00] What's going on everyone, welcome to another episode of Our Brains Hurt, thank you so much for hanging out again. December 7th at the Pie Shop in DC will be our next party slash show that Our Brains Hurt is doing. It will be the Jasons, Huntingtons, My Band The Blanks, Beatnik Termites, Dead End Lane and The Stivs. That's the Pie Shop on December 7th, it's a Saturday. Nice little way to bring in the holidays, watch for tickets.

[00:00:30] More info to come and that is that. Now, let's get to the show.

[00:00:35] Well they needed a jingle for their super little shirts or they caught up the Jasons and we said

[00:00:39] Hey what's going on?

[00:01:31] Sweet, this Zoom thing is getting better and better.

[00:01:38] How the heck are you?

[00:01:40] I am outstanding, how are you guys?

[00:01:42] Great.

[00:01:43] Amazing.

[00:01:44] Are you in a sauna?

[00:01:46] I wish I was in a sauna. This is actually my little

[00:01:50] recording space in my basement.

[00:01:52] Oh, nice.

[00:01:53] Nice.

[00:01:53] I love the hardwood.

[00:01:56] Yeah.

[00:01:56] Would you prefer a sauna or a hot tub if you had to choose?

[00:01:59] I prefer a steam shower.

[00:02:02] Okay.

[00:02:02] What's a steam shower?

[00:02:04] What's a steam shower? Is that like a sauna?

[00:02:07] Similar, but

[00:02:10] it's essentially

[00:02:13] depending on where you're at

[00:02:14] like

[00:02:14] ones I was in was

[00:02:16] pouring cold water

[00:02:18] over top of like hot stones and stuff

[00:02:20] and it makes steam.

[00:02:22] If you're in there too long

[00:02:23] it can be

[00:02:24] kind of scary.

[00:02:26] You'll want to pass out pretty quickly.

[00:02:28] Nice.

[00:02:30] Kind of like a sweat lodge.

[00:02:32] Have you ever done a sweat lodge?

[00:02:33] Exactly.

[00:02:33] That's exactly what it's like.

[00:02:35] Nice.

[00:02:36] Yeah.

[00:02:37] You're in there for 10 minutes

[00:02:39] and you try to stand up

[00:02:40] and you about fall over.

[00:02:42] Yep.

[00:02:43] Nice.

[00:02:43] Nice.

[00:02:44] I like the RKL shirt.

[00:02:46] Oh yeah.

[00:02:47] This Ron actually got this for me

[00:02:49] at one of their reunion shows

[00:02:52] in LA

[00:02:53] and you can only get these there

[00:02:55] and he got one for me

[00:02:56] and he got one for his brother

[00:02:58] but he couldn't get one for himself.

[00:03:01] Yep.

[00:03:03] I saw him post a couple pictures

[00:03:05] and videos that he was there.

[00:03:06] That's sick.

[00:03:07] It was fucking awesome.

[00:03:09] It was fucking insane.

[00:03:10] But I'm super appreciative of this

[00:03:12] especially since Ron

[00:03:13] he wanted one

[00:03:14] but he couldn't.

[00:03:15] I know.

[00:03:16] I know.

[00:03:18] And the hats too.

[00:03:19] I got a teacher hat.

[00:03:20] I did get one of the hats

[00:03:21] which were only

[00:03:22] which are only available

[00:03:23] at the shows.

[00:03:24] Yeah.

[00:03:24] I think everything I got you

[00:03:25] was only available

[00:03:26] at the shows

[00:03:27] because I don't see

[00:03:27] any of that stuff online.

[00:03:29] Yeah.

[00:03:31] I'm super appreciative of it.

[00:03:33] Yeah.

[00:03:33] Matt and I breathe,

[00:03:35] eat and sleep RKL.

[00:03:36] That's true.

[00:03:37] Well, I saw the whole lineup

[00:03:39] of guys from RKL you interviewed

[00:03:41] and then you messaged me

[00:03:43] and I thought

[00:03:43] where do I fall in on this?

[00:03:45] Dude, it's perfect.

[00:03:47] Dude, RKL, lag wagon,

[00:03:50] the fiddle.

[00:03:52] That's right.

[00:03:53] I was like,

[00:03:54] God, there's RKL guys.

[00:03:56] You had Fat Mike.

[00:03:59] Natasha Nice

[00:04:00] and then me.

[00:04:01] Ooh, Natasha Nice.

[00:04:05] Let me reflect on those titties

[00:04:06] for a second.

[00:04:08] Okay.

[00:04:08] All right.

[00:04:08] How can you not?

[00:04:15] These are the stories I love.

[00:04:18] Yeah.

[00:04:20] You have stories to tell

[00:04:21] and these are the ones

[00:04:22] that I love

[00:04:23] because they're like,

[00:04:24] you know,

[00:04:24] like people don't know

[00:04:27] they want to hear these stories

[00:04:28] because I don't know.

[00:04:32] Yeah.

[00:04:32] They're good story.

[00:04:34] It's funny

[00:04:35] because I'm going out to LA

[00:04:36] actually two weeks from today.

[00:04:37] I'm flying out to LA

[00:04:38] to see No Effects

[00:04:40] is doing their final shows

[00:04:41] ever out in LA.

[00:04:43] And I thought

[00:04:44] and Natasha lives in LA

[00:04:45] and I was like,

[00:04:46] you know what?

[00:04:46] I should hit her up

[00:04:47] and I was like,

[00:04:49] I'm going to offer

[00:04:50] to just buy her lunch one day.

[00:04:52] But I don't know

[00:04:53] if she remembers me

[00:04:55] or if I'm just going to be

[00:04:56] some creepy dude

[00:04:57] that randomly hits her up

[00:04:58] on fucking Twitter.

[00:05:01] And I just want to be like,

[00:05:02] hey, you've been on our podcast.

[00:05:04] You know,

[00:05:04] I'm going to be out in LA

[00:05:05] for a few days.

[00:05:06] I have a couple days free.

[00:05:08] Let's go do some lunch

[00:05:09] or coffee or whatever.

[00:05:11] I'm going to hit her up

[00:05:12] tonight or tomorrow

[00:05:13] and see what she says.

[00:05:14] Why not?

[00:05:15] Yeah, I will.

[00:05:16] But I don't know

[00:05:17] if she'll respond at all.

[00:05:18] And she'll probably be like,

[00:05:19] who the fuck is this?

[00:05:20] She said she liked it.

[00:05:22] Yeah.

[00:05:22] Yeah.

[00:05:25] I went to Columbus

[00:05:26] last year

[00:05:27] and I was there too.

[00:05:28] I was at Columbus

[00:05:29] last year.

[00:05:30] I'm kidding.

[00:05:30] Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:05:31] I was on the second day.

[00:05:32] I can't remember

[00:05:33] if it was a Saturday

[00:05:33] or Sunday,

[00:05:34] but that was a good show.

[00:05:36] Yeah.

[00:05:37] And then I just went to the

[00:05:39] one in Detroit

[00:05:40] a couple weeks ago here.

[00:05:41] Oh, did you?

[00:05:41] How was that?

[00:05:42] Yeah.

[00:05:42] It was okay.

[00:05:43] I'm glad I got this.

[00:05:44] Like, if that's,

[00:05:45] if that's,

[00:05:46] if, you know,

[00:05:47] by some freak chance

[00:05:48] I get to go out to LA,

[00:05:49] but I doubt it.

[00:05:50] Yeah.

[00:05:51] If, if my last time

[00:05:52] seeing them

[00:05:52] is in a club show,

[00:05:53] that's probably

[00:05:54] what I'd want to see.

[00:05:54] That's pretty cool.

[00:05:55] Yeah.

[00:05:55] Yeah.

[00:05:56] So the Columbus shows,

[00:05:58] we went,

[00:06:00] I went both nights,

[00:06:01] but the first night

[00:06:02] was Saturday.

[00:06:03] It was Saturday and Sunday.

[00:06:05] And Saturday,

[00:06:06] we just,

[00:06:07] my friend and I

[00:06:08] got there that night

[00:06:09] and we just,

[00:06:09] we just saw Circle Jerks

[00:06:10] and No Effects

[00:06:11] and No Effects

[00:06:12] played a complete shit

[00:06:13] on Saturday night.

[00:06:14] But Sunday night,

[00:06:15] they were,

[00:06:16] they were incredible

[00:06:16] on Sunday night.

[00:06:17] Yeah.

[00:06:18] So that was a show

[00:06:18] that you were at.

[00:06:19] And we were on stage

[00:06:20] for that one.

[00:06:22] So you went,

[00:06:22] you definitely got

[00:06:23] the good show

[00:06:24] of that weekend.

[00:06:25] If you went on that Sunday,

[00:06:26] they were,

[00:06:27] they were definitely good.

[00:06:28] Yeah.

[00:06:29] Yeah.

[00:06:29] That was a great lineup

[00:06:30] that day.

[00:06:31] I mean,

[00:06:31] the suicide machines,

[00:06:33] the dead descendants.

[00:06:35] I said the sentence

[00:06:35] twice that week.

[00:06:37] Oh,

[00:06:37] fuck yeah.

[00:06:37] Hell yeah.

[00:06:38] That's awesome.

[00:06:39] We're just going to,

[00:06:39] we're going to geek out

[00:06:40] about bands.

[00:06:41] We loved it.

[00:06:42] Hell yeah.

[00:06:44] It's what we do.

[00:06:46] Hell yeah.

[00:06:48] What are you,

[00:06:48] what are you drinking?

[00:06:51] So I'm drinking,

[00:06:52] you guys have your own beer

[00:06:53] now or something,

[00:06:54] don't you?

[00:06:54] Tomorrow or Saturday.

[00:06:57] I'm drinking dogfish head

[00:06:58] punk,

[00:06:58] punk and ale.

[00:07:00] Nice.

[00:07:00] Um,

[00:07:01] it's my favorite.

[00:07:03] It's my second favorite

[00:07:04] pumpkin beer.

[00:07:05] My first favorite,

[00:07:05] I think it was done.

[00:07:06] Maybe I don't,

[00:07:07] I haven't seen it this year.

[00:07:08] I'm afraid.

[00:07:09] I don't know.

[00:07:10] Yeah.

[00:07:10] Since,

[00:07:10] since you're just bringing up

[00:07:12] pumpkin beer right now,

[00:07:13] is it me Ron?

[00:07:14] Or did they not go as hard

[00:07:16] on pumpkin beer this year

[00:07:17] as they did last year?

[00:07:18] No,

[00:07:18] they backed off.

[00:07:19] They did.

[00:07:20] They backed off for sure.

[00:07:21] They did back for sure.

[00:07:21] They backed off.

[00:07:30] I'd rather have a good,

[00:07:31] heavy Oktoberfest,

[00:07:32] but I don't know.

[00:07:34] I love Oktoberfest.

[00:07:35] Yeah.

[00:07:36] The two best pumpkin beers

[00:07:37] they didn't make this year.

[00:07:38] Which one?

[00:07:39] Make the UFO

[00:07:41] return to planet pumpkin.

[00:07:42] I haven't seen that.

[00:07:43] That's right.

[00:07:44] I didn't even think about that.

[00:07:45] And the Duncan pumpkin.

[00:07:46] They're nowhere to be seen.

[00:07:48] Yeah.

[00:07:50] That's a shame.

[00:07:51] Yeah.

[00:07:52] Um,

[00:07:55] so

[00:07:56] have you ever had pumpkin beer?

[00:07:57] You just don't

[00:07:58] or you just have a few.

[00:08:00] It just like,

[00:08:01] I,

[00:08:01] I like my beer to taste like beer.

[00:08:03] I can't,

[00:08:04] I can't get into like flavored stuff.

[00:08:05] I totally get that.

[00:08:07] I totally get that.

[00:08:07] Yeah.

[00:08:08] No,

[00:08:08] there,

[00:08:08] there was a,

[00:08:09] there,

[00:08:10] there was some kind of blueberry beer

[00:08:11] I had not too long ago.

[00:08:12] And I,

[00:08:13] and I was like,

[00:08:13] this is going to be disgusting.

[00:08:15] Please don't.

[00:08:15] Yeah.

[00:08:16] Don't force this beer on me.

[00:08:18] And I tried it.

[00:08:18] I was like,

[00:08:19] uh,

[00:08:20] I could probably drink about five or six of those.

[00:08:22] Pretty easy.

[00:08:22] Was it the UFO?

[00:08:24] Was it the UFO blueberry one?

[00:08:26] It might've been.

[00:08:26] I can't remember what it was.

[00:08:28] That is a,

[00:08:29] that's a good one.

[00:08:29] That one's pretty good.

[00:08:30] Yeah,

[00:08:30] it is pretty good.

[00:08:31] UFO is a great brewery.

[00:08:34] Uh,

[00:08:36] Massachusetts.

[00:08:37] So UFO,

[00:08:39] it used to be a part of harpoon brewery,

[00:08:42] which is somewhat of a big brewery out of Boston.

[00:08:45] Yeah.

[00:08:45] And,

[00:08:46] uh,

[00:08:47] and they would do this like harpoon corner of the brewery

[00:08:49] where they would put out basically like,

[00:08:51] uh,

[00:08:53] different fruit radlers,

[00:08:55] basically.

[00:08:56] Yeah.

[00:08:56] But they,

[00:08:57] but they were all really,

[00:08:58] really good.

[00:08:58] They were like the best.

[00:09:00] If you wanted a fruity beer,

[00:09:01] that was the one you went to period.

[00:09:04] Uh,

[00:09:04] and it got so big that those people that were doing the little corner

[00:09:08] that branched off and made their own brewery,

[00:09:10] which is now just UFO brewery.

[00:09:12] Cool.

[00:09:13] Yeah.

[00:09:14] So anything UFO puts out is fantastic.

[00:09:17] Uh,

[00:09:18] they have a,

[00:09:19] um,

[00:09:21] uh,

[00:09:21] and this is still really weird for me to say,

[00:09:23] because historically I've always been the same as you.

[00:09:26] Like I just,

[00:09:27] you know,

[00:09:28] I pounded fucking Miller lights.

[00:09:30] And when I,

[00:09:31] when I wanted to be cheap and yeah.

[00:09:34] And like stouts and fucking what,

[00:09:36] uh,

[00:09:37] they had this like raspberry wheat,

[00:09:41] something or other.

[00:09:43] Um,

[00:09:43] it's called Raswell.

[00:09:45] It's like a little UFO on it,

[00:09:46] which is really true.

[00:09:48] I was like,

[00:09:49] I'm not a raspberry fan,

[00:09:50] but I do like wheat beers from time to time.

[00:09:53] So I bought in a fuck.

[00:09:54] If it's not the best fucking wheat beer I've ever had in my entire life.

[00:09:57] It's so fucking good.

[00:09:58] Yeah.

[00:09:59] I'll have to try it.

[00:10:00] Yeah.

[00:10:01] They,

[00:10:01] they,

[00:10:01] they do it right.

[00:10:02] It's not overpowered with fruit.

[00:10:03] It's like subtle.

[00:10:04] I don't know.

[00:10:05] It's just fucking good.

[00:10:06] I feel like,

[00:10:06] I feel like you really don't have to search for a lot of this stuff anymore.

[00:10:09] Like there's a lot,

[00:10:10] like there's so many,

[00:10:10] uh,

[00:10:11] micro brewers around it.

[00:10:13] There's a lot of,

[00:10:14] a lot of distributors carry so many things anymore.

[00:10:16] It's not hard to find stuff.

[00:10:18] No,

[00:10:18] it's not hard at all.

[00:10:19] It is.

[00:10:20] That is definitely a very true word.

[00:10:23] Yeah.

[00:10:23] Where do you live,

[00:10:24] Luke?

[00:10:24] Where are you?

[00:10:25] I,

[00:10:26] I am about an hour North of Pittsburgh and probably you keep going another hour and 15 and I'd be in Cleveland.

[00:10:36] Okay.

[00:10:38] So I'm,

[00:10:39] I'm,

[00:10:40] I'm,

[00:10:40] I'm in,

[00:10:41] I'm in BFE.

[00:10:45] You're still only like four or five hours from each of us though.

[00:10:48] Yeah,

[00:10:49] I know.

[00:10:49] It's like nothing.

[00:10:51] And it probably plays in bands.

[00:10:53] It's like,

[00:10:54] it's like four hour drives,

[00:10:55] nothing.

[00:10:57] Cool.

[00:10:59] Yeah.

[00:10:59] But on,

[00:11:00] but on the East coast in terms of like going to meet band places or bands places to,

[00:11:07] to play with,

[00:11:09] it's a pretty decent location.

[00:11:12] Yeah.

[00:11:13] It's like right in the heart of everything.

[00:11:15] Everything's four hours away.

[00:11:16] Detroit's four hours away.

[00:11:19] Columbus and Ohio and Cincinnati are four and four and a half hours away.

[00:11:24] I mean,

[00:11:26] DC is four and a half hours away.

[00:11:27] Like it couldn't be a better spot.

[00:11:30] Yeah.

[00:11:31] Yeah.

[00:11:32] That's,

[00:11:32] that's not bad at all.

[00:11:33] Cause I,

[00:11:34] you know,

[00:11:34] I'm sure you continue to get hired by.

[00:11:40] Yeah.

[00:11:42] It's,

[00:11:42] it's certainly helps being an odd ball instrument.

[00:11:45] Yeah.

[00:11:47] Well,

[00:11:48] let's talk about that for a second.

[00:11:49] So you play the fiddle and we've had you on before with 500 miles to Memphis.

[00:11:55] Talk to us about some of the people you've played with.

[00:11:57] How did you start?

[00:11:58] Like how old were you when you started playing?

[00:12:01] How did you get into music and kind of tell us about your journey?

[00:12:04] Ooh,

[00:12:05] that's a long story.

[00:12:07] Um,

[00:12:08] well,

[00:12:08] good.

[00:12:08] Um,

[00:12:09] we have time and beer.

[00:12:11] So go ahead.

[00:12:13] I,

[00:12:13] I,

[00:12:13] I,

[00:12:14] I started playing when I was four years old.

[00:12:16] Um,

[00:12:17] my,

[00:12:18] my mom,

[00:12:19] uh,

[00:12:20] do you know what a hammer dalsimer and a mountain dalsimer are?

[00:12:22] Like folk,

[00:12:23] folk instruments,

[00:12:24] like the inside of a piano is,

[00:12:25] is a hammer dalsimer.

[00:12:26] It's,

[00:12:26] it's like basically the strings laid out from the inside of a piano and you're,

[00:12:31] you're hitting the strings with,

[00:12:33] uh,

[00:12:33] like little wooden hammers instead of piano keys.

[00:12:36] Okay.

[00:12:37] Um,

[00:12:38] so my mom was learning how to play that.

[00:12:40] She had a,

[00:12:40] had a,

[00:12:41] a folk group that she played at like local festivals and stuff.

[00:12:46] And our neighbor.

[00:12:47] And is this Pennsylvania?

[00:12:47] Is this Pennsylvania?

[00:12:48] And Pennsylvania,

[00:12:50] pretty much all Pennsylvania.

[00:12:51] There's a little bit in like Columbia and Ohio and things like that.

[00:12:54] um,

[00:12:55] but,

[00:12:55] uh,

[00:12:56] our neighbor played fiddle and,

[00:12:58] um,

[00:12:59] she wasn't amazing or anything,

[00:13:01] but I loved the instrument.

[00:13:04] And,

[00:13:04] uh,

[00:13:05] my mom started taking me to get lessons and I,

[00:13:07] I started out doing classical stuff and,

[00:13:10] uh,

[00:13:10] and then probably I was close to eight,

[00:13:14] 10 years old.

[00:13:14] I started taking like fiddle and bluegrass lessons and,

[00:13:17] um,

[00:13:19] uh,

[00:13:20] we'd go to bluegrass festivals at eight.

[00:13:22] Yeah.

[00:13:22] Wow.

[00:13:23] Okay.

[00:13:23] So you have awesome parents,

[00:13:25] by the way,

[00:13:26] my parents rule.

[00:13:28] That's like,

[00:13:29] yeah,

[00:13:30] my parents,

[00:13:31] my parents were kind of strict,

[00:13:33] but they were more like they gave a shit than they were strict.

[00:13:36] That's so,

[00:13:36] yeah,

[00:13:38] it's,

[00:13:39] it was a pretty great childhood.

[00:13:41] I grew up in the middle of nowhere.

[00:13:43] So,

[00:13:43] uh,

[00:13:43] I spent most of,

[00:13:45] most of my days in the woods.

[00:13:48] Oh,

[00:13:48] the good thing.

[00:13:49] It's a good thing.

[00:13:50] But as,

[00:13:51] as far as fiddle playing,

[00:13:52] like I,

[00:13:52] I,

[00:13:53] when I was 15,

[00:13:54] I,

[00:13:54] I joined a band.

[00:13:55] It was mostly doing like square dances.

[00:13:58] And,

[00:13:58] uh,

[00:14:00] I don't want to say like bluegrass,

[00:14:01] because they were playing like polkas.

[00:14:04] It was,

[00:14:05] it was like set up.

[00:14:06] You'd play,

[00:14:06] you'd play a square of like 15 minutes.

[00:14:10] It was like,

[00:14:10] like 15 minutes of a square dance.

[00:14:13] And then,

[00:14:14] uh,

[00:14:14] you'd,

[00:14:15] you'd play a Walt Sepulka and like another song.

[00:14:18] And then they like,

[00:14:18] everything was laid out like in 15 minute increments.

[00:14:22] And I did that for a few years.

[00:14:24] And,

[00:14:24] um,

[00:14:25] then I started getting calls for playing country bands in Pittsburgh.

[00:14:30] Um,

[00:14:31] there's,

[00:14:32] there's like maybe three decent fiddle players that have,

[00:14:36] that have been playing with country bands the last probably 15 years in town.

[00:14:40] Um,

[00:14:41] ever anybody else that's,

[00:14:42] that's decent moves,

[00:14:43] moves to Nashville.

[00:14:45] Um,

[00:14:45] yeah,

[00:14:46] but like off and on between all that stuff.

[00:14:48] Like I played drums,

[00:14:49] uh,

[00:14:50] for a punk band,

[00:14:51] uh,

[00:14:51] when I was in college.

[00:14:53] Um,

[00:14:54] I wouldn't say I'm a good drummer,

[00:14:56] but it was,

[00:14:57] it was punk music.

[00:14:58] So they really didn't,

[00:14:58] really didn't.

[00:14:59] What was the band called?

[00:15:00] Where'd you go to college?

[00:15:01] Oh man,

[00:15:01] I went to Clarion university.

[00:15:03] It's,

[00:15:03] uh,

[00:15:04] uh,

[00:15:05] probably,

[00:15:05] probably another hour and a half North.

[00:15:07] Okay.

[00:15:08] Um,

[00:15:09] that's where I grew up.

[00:15:10] Uh,

[00:15:11] what was the band called?

[00:15:12] What was the band called?

[00:15:13] Band was called earth time.

[00:15:14] And then,

[00:15:15] uh,

[00:15:15] after I quit,

[00:15:16] they,

[00:15:16] um,

[00:15:17] well,

[00:15:17] we just kind of fizzled out,

[00:15:18] but then I reformed with the bass player and guitar player and another drummer.

[00:15:22] And,

[00:15:22] um,

[00:15:23] they went by train wreck punch.

[00:15:25] Okay.

[00:15:26] Uh,

[00:15:29] that was a,

[00:15:30] that was a drink we used to make when we were in college.

[00:15:33] Sounds right.

[00:15:37] Um,

[00:15:38] so,

[00:15:39] uh,

[00:15:40] and,

[00:15:40] and while I was playing country bands,

[00:15:42] I got,

[00:15:43] uh,

[00:15:44] I subbed a couple of times playing for,

[00:15:45] uh,

[00:15:46] bastard bearded Irishman.

[00:15:48] I've known those guys for years.

[00:15:49] Um,

[00:15:50] I work with them.

[00:15:52] Uh,

[00:15:52] a lot of,

[00:15:52] few of the guys work in a film industry,

[00:15:55] but,

[00:15:55] um,

[00:15:56] we're all union workers and we're like the singers,

[00:15:58] a medic and,

[00:15:59] uh,

[00:16:00] me and,

[00:16:01] uh,

[00:16:01] the other mandolin player,

[00:16:02] we work,

[00:16:02] uh,

[00:16:03] basically construction and set building and stuff.

[00:16:05] Um,

[00:16:06] so that's our,

[00:16:07] that's our regular jobs.

[00:16:08] But,

[00:16:09] uh,

[00:16:09] um,

[00:16:10] so I subbed off and on for them.

[00:16:12] I still kind of play country once in a while,

[00:16:15] but it's just not my thing.

[00:16:17] Um,

[00:16:18] and it's fine.

[00:16:19] Like I like playing with the people and as long as everybody's good musicians and not a complete asshole,

[00:16:24] I can,

[00:16:24] I can deal with about anything.

[00:16:26] Um,

[00:16:27] uh,

[00:16:28] I played with,

[00:16:29] uh,

[00:16:29] a group called,

[00:16:30] um,

[00:16:31] um,

[00:16:32] the Sparrows.

[00:16:33] They were kind of like,

[00:16:35] um,

[00:16:36] among their originals,

[00:16:37] they'd play like early Wallflower stuff,

[00:16:39] uh,

[00:16:39] the band,

[00:16:40] um,

[00:16:41] things like that.

[00:16:42] Like,

[00:16:43] like,

[00:16:43] like very alt rock,

[00:16:44] alt country type stuff.

[00:16:46] Um,

[00:16:47] yeah.

[00:16:48] And,

[00:16:48] and then like most recently here after 500 broke up.

[00:16:51] Well,

[00:16:52] we can get into 500.

[00:16:53] Yeah.

[00:16:54] I,

[00:16:54] uh,

[00:16:55] I,

[00:16:55] I reached out to Ryan,

[00:16:57] uh,

[00:16:57] singer.

[00:16:58] Um,

[00:16:59] I want to say late 2019,

[00:17:02] uh,

[00:17:03] just,

[00:17:04] I,

[00:17:04] I had just found them honestly.

[00:17:06] And,

[00:17:07] um,

[00:17:08] I reached out to him.

[00:17:09] I was like,

[00:17:09] man,

[00:17:10] I really like your band and everything.

[00:17:11] You got,

[00:17:11] you got banjo and fiddle and,

[00:17:14] and a bunch of other stuff,

[00:17:15] like nice layers of instruments over stuff.

[00:17:18] And really,

[00:17:20] uh,

[00:17:20] the early few albums and everything.

[00:17:23] I was like,

[00:17:23] man,

[00:17:24] this is like really well mixed.

[00:17:26] Some of the stuff's like really,

[00:17:29] like almost skate punk ish.

[00:17:31] And then it goes into kind of like a weird country vibe.

[00:17:34] Yeah.

[00:17:34] And,

[00:17:34] uh,

[00:17:35] so I was just like BSing with him.

[00:17:37] And I was like,

[00:17:37] I don't know if you don't take a fiddle player with you when you're doing live

[00:17:41] stuff.

[00:17:41] So if you ever need anybody and he's like,

[00:17:43] well,

[00:17:44] funny,

[00:17:45] uh,

[00:17:45] I'm going to send you these tracks if you want to record some stuff.

[00:17:48] And then we're playing a show.

[00:17:50] Like it was a month later.

[00:17:52] He's like,

[00:17:52] if you want to come down.

[00:17:53] And,

[00:17:54] uh,

[00:17:54] so I did.

[00:17:55] And I'm getting like,

[00:17:58] we're all loading up and he goes,

[00:17:59] yeah.

[00:17:59] So,

[00:18:00] uh,

[00:18:00] balls in your court.

[00:18:01] If you want to join this band,

[00:18:05] it's like,

[00:18:06] like,

[00:18:06] okay,

[00:18:07] well,

[00:18:07] let me get my,

[00:18:08] get my shit together and we'll,

[00:18:10] and,

[00:18:10] uh,

[00:18:10] we'll talk.

[00:18:11] And,

[00:18:11] uh,

[00:18:12] and,

[00:18:13] um,

[00:18:13] are they out of Cincinnati?

[00:18:14] The Cincinnati area?

[00:18:16] Yeah.

[00:18:16] Yeah.

[00:18:17] For the most,

[00:18:17] for the most part.

[00:18:18] Uh,

[00:18:18] when,

[00:18:18] when I joined,

[00:18:20] um,

[00:18:21] like Ryan and the drummer,

[00:18:22] they were both living in Kentucky,

[00:18:24] pretty much right across from Cincinnati.

[00:18:25] I remember that.

[00:18:25] Cause my,

[00:18:26] my daughter goes to the university of Kentucky and he was saying he's only a

[00:18:28] couple hours North of there.

[00:18:30] Yeah.

[00:18:30] He's not far from there at all.

[00:18:31] Cause we were talking about green,

[00:18:33] the green lantern.

[00:18:34] The green lantern.

[00:18:35] Yeah.

[00:18:35] Did you go down there?

[00:18:37] I haven't been to the,

[00:18:38] I've,

[00:18:38] I've been to Lexington plenty of times cause my daughter goes to school

[00:18:41] there,

[00:18:41] but I haven't been to the green lantern yet.

[00:18:43] So it's a cool place.

[00:18:45] And I always go food trucks and stuff outside.

[00:18:47] It's awesome.

[00:18:48] It's a cool venue.

[00:18:49] Yeah.

[00:18:49] I think a great,

[00:18:50] great selection of beer.

[00:18:51] Awesome.

[00:18:52] Yeah.

[00:18:52] I'll check it out.

[00:18:53] I'm going back,

[00:18:54] uh,

[00:18:54] at the end of October.

[00:18:55] My,

[00:18:56] my daughter turns 21.

[00:18:57] She's a junior now.

[00:18:58] So she turns 21 October 28th.

[00:19:00] And I'm,

[00:19:01] I'm my wife and I,

[00:19:02] and my,

[00:19:02] my,

[00:19:03] my mother and stepfather are going out.

[00:19:06] we're spending a weekend.

[00:19:06] We're going to the Kentucky Auburn football game.

[00:19:09] Um,

[00:19:10] nice.

[00:19:10] So maybe I'll try to check out green lantern that weekend when I go out.

[00:19:14] Yeah.

[00:19:14] Check,

[00:19:14] check their schedule and see what's up.

[00:19:16] Cause there's,

[00:19:17] there's,

[00:19:17] there's always some cool bands playing there.

[00:19:19] Cool.

[00:19:19] Yeah.

[00:20:19] Yeah.

[00:20:19] So,

[00:20:20] uh,

[00:20:21] started recording some stuff with Ryan COVID happened.

[00:20:24] We can skip all that.

[00:20:26] Um,

[00:20:28] uh,

[00:20:28] shows started picking back up and we were trying to hit things pretty hard.

[00:20:32] It was,

[00:20:32] it was,

[00:20:33] it was,

[00:20:33] uh,

[00:20:34] it was hard booking stuff after COVID.

[00:20:37] Um,

[00:20:38] and,

[00:20:38] uh,

[00:20:39] I,

[00:20:39] you know,

[00:20:40] they've been struggling for 20 years themselves.

[00:20:42] So it was,

[00:20:44] they needed a break.

[00:20:45] They were burnt out.

[00:20:46] And then,

[00:20:47] uh,

[00:20:47] and,

[00:20:48] um,

[00:20:48] I don't think when we talked last time that our steel player had passed yet,

[00:20:53] Dave,

[00:20:53] David Rhodes Brown,

[00:20:54] um,

[00:20:56] it was,

[00:20:56] he,

[00:20:56] he had,

[00:20:57] he had lung cancer from smoking so much.

[00:20:59] Oh no shit.

[00:21:00] And,

[00:21:01] and I barely even got to play with him.

[00:21:03] He was an incredible,

[00:21:04] incredible dude.

[00:21:05] And,

[00:21:05] and he's like six,

[00:21:07] six,

[00:21:07] five.

[00:21:08] And like when,

[00:21:09] when Ryan said,

[00:21:10] eh,

[00:21:11] make yourself available.

[00:21:12] And,

[00:21:13] uh,

[00:21:13] and he like leans down and over me like lurch.

[00:21:16] And he's like,

[00:21:17] make yourself,

[00:21:18] make yourself available.

[00:21:20] Yes,

[00:21:21] yes,

[00:21:21] sir.

[00:21:22] Yes,

[00:21:22] sir.

[00:21:22] Right away,

[00:21:22] sir.

[00:21:24] So,

[00:21:25] so he,

[00:21:26] he had passed here not too long ago.

[00:21:28] And,

[00:21:29] uh,

[00:21:30] when,

[00:21:30] and it was like shortly after that,

[00:21:32] uh,

[00:21:33] we just,

[00:21:33] we discussed,

[00:21:34] taking a break and,

[00:21:36] right.

[00:21:36] And,

[00:21:36] uh,

[00:21:37] doing,

[00:21:37] doing a final possible final show.

[00:21:39] I'm hoping there's never a final show.

[00:21:41] I like coming back and doing things,

[00:21:42] but I don't know.

[00:21:43] Yeah.

[00:21:44] Um,

[00:21:45] but not too long after that,

[00:21:47] um,

[00:21:47] I was,

[00:21:48] uh,

[00:21:49] I did,

[00:21:49] I subbed a couple of gigs for,

[00:21:50] uh,

[00:21:51] bastard bearded Irishman again,

[00:21:52] and they're kind of like,

[00:21:54] uh,

[00:21:55] kind of flogging Molly ask.

[00:21:57] Cool.

[00:21:57] Um,

[00:21:58] I,

[00:21:58] I w I want to say,

[00:22:01] there's a little bit more of like a middle Eastern sound to their songs.

[00:22:05] Cause there's some minor chords and things going on in there that it's just not,

[00:22:10] it's happy.

[00:22:11] But when you look at how the arrangement of stuff is,

[00:22:15] it's like,

[00:22:15] man,

[00:22:15] it's like all these weird minor chords and shit like this.

[00:22:17] Yeah.

[00:22:18] I don't,

[00:22:18] I don't know how they portray it like this,

[00:22:20] but it works.

[00:22:21] Um,

[00:22:21] so it's,

[00:22:22] it's,

[00:22:23] it's a,

[00:22:23] it's a little flogging Molly goggle bordello type,

[00:22:25] type.

[00:22:26] Okay.

[00:22:26] Stuff going on there.

[00:22:28] So yeah,

[00:22:28] it's,

[00:22:29] it's,

[00:22:29] uh,

[00:22:29] I started subbing some,

[00:22:31] subbing some things for them.

[00:22:33] And,

[00:22:33] uh,

[00:22:34] the singer's like,

[00:22:35] fuck it.

[00:22:35] Why don't you,

[00:22:36] why don't you just,

[00:22:36] uh,

[00:22:36] keep showing up at shows?

[00:22:37] You,

[00:22:38] I said,

[00:22:38] I don't want to commit to anything.

[00:22:40] And,

[00:22:41] uh,

[00:22:41] he's like,

[00:22:42] that's fine.

[00:22:42] Just show up when you want to.

[00:22:45] So I,

[00:22:45] uh,

[00:22:46] I think I've missed one show since then.

[00:22:49] And we,

[00:22:49] and we,

[00:22:50] we've had,

[00:22:50] we've had two fiddle players and,

[00:22:52] and we're just,

[00:22:52] uh,

[00:22:53] harmonizing and shit.

[00:22:54] And it's a lot of fun.

[00:22:56] And,

[00:22:57] and it's weird because like they definitely hit.

[00:23:00] Irish festival stuff hard.

[00:23:02] And,

[00:23:03] uh,

[00:23:03] which is cool.

[00:23:04] It always ends up being fun and everybody's shit faced and having a good

[00:23:06] time.

[00:23:07] So it's,

[00:23:07] it's kind of hard not to have a good time,

[00:23:09] but like we'll do this weird crowd of Irish festival.

[00:23:14] And then like we,

[00:23:16] we went to this,

[00:23:17] played this record store with the Huntington's and the downstrokes and stuff.

[00:23:21] I don't know if I like Savage mountain area.

[00:23:23] And,

[00:23:24] uh,

[00:23:26] it's like,

[00:23:27] it's like a very weird mix of shows and stuff.

[00:23:30] So it's,

[00:23:30] it's interesting.

[00:23:32] That's awesome.

[00:23:32] My new band is putting out a split seven inch with the Huntington's this,

[00:23:35] this December.

[00:23:36] It's a Christmas split seven.

[00:23:38] And so we just,

[00:23:38] we just spent the last weekend recording with Joe queer down in Atlanta.

[00:23:42] Um,

[00:23:43] we,

[00:23:44] we,

[00:23:45] we,

[00:23:45] we recorded those two songs that are going to be going to be on a split with

[00:23:48] the Huntington's and then five others that'll be on a,

[00:23:50] um,

[00:23:51] an EP probably in the spring.

[00:23:53] Um,

[00:23:54] who's going to,

[00:23:55] who's releasing that?

[00:23:57] Uh,

[00:23:57] so little lost girl,

[00:23:59] little lost girl records.

[00:24:00] She's,

[00:24:01] uh,

[00:24:01] Athena Athens.

[00:24:02] She's out of,

[00:24:03] uh,

[00:24:03] Portland,

[00:24:03] Oregon.

[00:24:05] She's going to release that split seven inch with,

[00:24:07] it's,

[00:24:07] it's going to be us in the Huntington's.

[00:24:10] Um,

[00:24:11] and then as far as the EP goes,

[00:24:13] uh,

[00:24:14] it'll be,

[00:24:14] uh,

[00:24:14] I own a record label called snubbed records.

[00:24:16] It'll be like a snubbed records slash,

[00:24:19] and I'm going to shop it around to another label.

[00:24:21] Uh,

[00:24:22] I'm hoping for like a dual label.

[00:24:24] Release,

[00:24:24] uh,

[00:24:25] for that,

[00:24:25] but,

[00:24:26] um,

[00:24:27] yeah,

[00:24:27] but we had a great time.

[00:24:28] This is blanks.

[00:24:29] The blanks.

[00:24:30] Yeah,

[00:24:31] there you go.

[00:24:31] Yeah.

[00:24:31] Look at you knowing me.

[00:24:33] I,

[00:24:33] I educate myself once in a while.

[00:24:39] Well,

[00:24:40] I mean,

[00:24:40] I,

[00:24:40] I,

[00:24:41] I listen to you guys.

[00:24:42] I try to keep up with what's going on.

[00:24:45] Thanks.

[00:24:46] Oh yeah.

[00:24:46] That's very,

[00:24:47] that's greatly appreciated.

[00:24:50] Yeah.

[00:24:51] I,

[00:24:51] I,

[00:24:51] I,

[00:24:52] I try to keep my head,

[00:24:53] ear to the ground and what's going on.

[00:24:56] and,

[00:24:57] uh,

[00:24:57] I mean,

[00:24:57] you guys are always doing pie shop shows and everything too.

[00:25:00] So,

[00:25:00] Oh yeah.

[00:25:01] I gotta,

[00:25:01] I gotta get down there eventually.

[00:25:02] I got,

[00:25:03] I got some friends down in,

[00:25:04] in,

[00:25:04] uh,

[00:25:05] in,

[00:25:05] um,

[00:25:06] Hanover,

[00:25:07] Baltimore area.

[00:25:08] It'd be so easy to go down and see people when I'd swing down.

[00:25:11] Yeah.

[00:25:11] That'd be great.

[00:25:12] Yeah.

[00:25:13] Yeah.

[00:25:13] So,

[00:25:14] okay.

[00:25:14] So wait,

[00:25:15] you said that 500 miles to Memphis,

[00:25:17] are they done now?

[00:25:18] Is it?

[00:25:19] Yeah.

[00:25:19] It's a recent thing.

[00:25:20] Okay.

[00:25:22] As far as the world knows it is,

[00:25:24] it is done.

[00:25:24] Okay.

[00:25:27] I can't,

[00:25:28] I can't say we won't ever be in the same room together again.

[00:25:31] It wasn't a bad,

[00:25:32] it wasn't a bad break.

[00:25:33] It's just what,

[00:25:34] what happened.

[00:25:35] Yeah.

[00:25:36] Gotcha.

[00:25:36] I,

[00:25:37] I was,

[00:25:37] I was,

[00:25:37] I was just kind of caught.

[00:25:39] Yeah.

[00:25:39] Uh,

[00:25:41] I mean,

[00:25:42] I was just kind of present for the whole situation because I was,

[00:25:44] uh,

[00:25:45] I was the last person to commend all of that.

[00:25:47] And,

[00:25:48] uh,

[00:25:49] and there was never,

[00:25:50] there was never a bad moment playing with them.

[00:25:53] Like it was probably the best situation I was ever in playing in a band

[00:25:59] because we,

[00:26:00] we all got there.

[00:26:00] We all hugged each other at the end of the night,

[00:26:03] we all hugged each other and hung out and drank.

[00:26:05] And,

[00:26:05] and I don't,

[00:26:06] I never heard anybody bitch about one thing.

[00:26:08] And that's cool.

[00:26:09] And it's,

[00:26:10] it's not,

[00:26:11] not like every show was,

[00:26:12] was the best show ever,

[00:26:13] but I mean,

[00:26:14] everybody,

[00:26:15] you could tell that those guys were friends first and I,

[00:26:18] and I was welcomed into the fold.

[00:26:19] That's awesome.

[00:26:20] That's awesome.

[00:26:21] Cause it doesn't always fucking work out like that.

[00:26:28] Speaking to other guys that have played in several bands and how it

[00:26:31] goes.

[00:26:32] Yeah.

[00:26:32] There's a,

[00:26:33] there's always somebody,

[00:26:34] but I,

[00:26:35] I,

[00:26:35] I can say in that,

[00:26:36] that band are really,

[00:26:37] there's,

[00:26:38] you know,

[00:26:39] everybody's got their own personalities and things,

[00:26:41] but there was never,

[00:26:43] I could,

[00:26:44] I could call any of them up now and,

[00:26:46] and,

[00:26:46] and we could be on the phone for three hours.

[00:26:49] Awesome.

[00:26:50] Oh,

[00:26:50] that's awesome.

[00:26:51] Yeah.

[00:26:52] It was a great situation.

[00:26:53] Super rad.

[00:26:53] Yeah.

[00:26:54] And,

[00:26:54] and,

[00:26:55] and,

[00:26:55] and guys and,

[00:26:56] and,

[00:26:56] um,

[00:26:57] uh,

[00:26:58] bastards are pretty similar.

[00:26:59] Cool.

[00:27:00] So,

[00:27:01] yeah.

[00:27:01] So I'm,

[00:27:02] I'm,

[00:27:02] I'm in a good situation right now.

[00:27:03] And,

[00:27:04] uh,

[00:27:04] I,

[00:27:05] they're,

[00:27:06] they're recording some stuff and,

[00:27:07] and they,

[00:27:08] they sent me some stems and stuff.

[00:27:09] If I've,

[00:27:10] if I want to add things,

[00:27:11] it's kind of,

[00:27:12] kind of like up to my discretion.

[00:27:15] And so it's kind of a nice situation,

[00:27:18] especially my,

[00:27:18] my,

[00:27:19] my son's six years old.

[00:27:20] And,

[00:27:21] and,

[00:27:21] uh,

[00:27:22] so he,

[00:27:23] he's back in school and,

[00:27:24] and,

[00:27:24] uh,

[00:27:26] just been booking any side gig or playing with them.

[00:27:29] So that's,

[00:27:30] that's kind of where my life's at right now.

[00:27:32] Is that your only kid?

[00:27:34] Yeah.

[00:27:34] I just have one.

[00:27:35] He is the coolest kid ever.

[00:27:38] He has got some personality.

[00:27:40] Yeah.

[00:27:40] Only,

[00:27:41] I only have one as well.

[00:27:42] Um,

[00:27:43] my daughter turns 21,

[00:27:45] uh,

[00:27:46] in a couple of weeks.

[00:27:47] So,

[00:27:47] but,

[00:27:47] well,

[00:27:48] I'm like,

[00:27:48] I could have a 21 year old house.

[00:27:53] We,

[00:27:54] we started,

[00:27:54] we started late and we're just,

[00:27:56] he's going to be the only one.

[00:27:57] I hear you know,

[00:27:57] I was early.

[00:27:58] I,

[00:27:58] you know,

[00:27:59] I was 25.

[00:28:00] So,

[00:28:00] um,

[00:28:01] he,

[00:28:01] he's,

[00:28:02] he just picked up.

[00:28:03] I was like,

[00:28:04] you know,

[00:28:05] just doing instrument maintenance maintenance last week.

[00:28:08] And he comes over and he starts plucking strings and stuff.

[00:28:11] And he's asking questions.

[00:28:12] And I was like,

[00:28:12] dude,

[00:28:13] you have your own,

[00:28:14] your own like quarter,

[00:28:15] quarter size fiddle.

[00:28:16] Go,

[00:28:16] go get it.

[00:28:17] And,

[00:28:18] uh,

[00:28:18] he comes over and he's,

[00:28:20] he's pulling everything out and he's,

[00:28:21] I'm showing him how to hold it and everything.

[00:28:23] And,

[00:28:23] and,

[00:28:24] uh,

[00:28:25] and I was like,

[00:28:25] what's,

[00:28:26] uh,

[00:28:26] let's just like do some bow patterns and stuff like that.

[00:28:29] Yeah.

[00:28:29] Cause I,

[00:28:30] I,

[00:28:30] I couldn't get them.

[00:28:32] I couldn't get them to do much,

[00:28:34] but I,

[00:28:35] I,

[00:28:35] I do like,

[00:28:36] I can do like some kind of bowing pattern.

[00:28:38] He's,

[00:28:38] he's got an ear.

[00:28:39] Like he's just got to figure it out and I'm not going to,

[00:28:42] I'm not going to push him.

[00:28:43] Yeah.

[00:28:44] When he decides he wants to do it,

[00:28:45] then that's fine.

[00:28:46] But like,

[00:28:46] I was like,

[00:28:47] we can do this every day if you want.

[00:28:48] He's like,

[00:28:49] yeah.

[00:28:50] So like,

[00:28:51] maybe we've,

[00:28:52] we've missed a couple of days here,

[00:28:54] but for maybe five,

[00:28:55] 10 minutes,

[00:28:56] we'd sit there and just make noise.

[00:28:57] And it's,

[00:28:58] it's cool.

[00:28:59] I,

[00:28:59] I,

[00:29:00] I really hope he does something.

[00:29:01] I don't care if he plays fiddle.

[00:29:03] I just want him to play music.

[00:29:04] Cause sure.

[00:29:04] Yeah.

[00:29:05] Sure helped me a hell of a lot.

[00:29:06] And he is very,

[00:29:08] he's a very busy kid.

[00:29:09] So like,

[00:29:10] I think it'll probably wrangle him in a little bit.

[00:29:14] Yeah.

[00:29:14] Yeah.

[00:29:15] Well,

[00:29:15] the cool thing about having a kid at like 25 was like,

[00:29:19] it's like,

[00:29:20] you're still loving it.

[00:29:21] Yeah.

[00:29:21] It's like,

[00:29:21] dude,

[00:29:22] I'm,

[00:29:22] I know exactly.

[00:29:23] Like,

[00:29:23] I know you're lying because I'm still lying to my wife about the shit you're

[00:29:27] lying about.

[00:29:27] Like,

[00:29:30] you can't like,

[00:29:31] stop fucking with me.

[00:29:32] Like,

[00:29:32] I know exactly what you're doing.

[00:29:33] Like,

[00:29:34] yeah.

[00:29:34] Yeah.

[00:29:35] You know,

[00:29:35] like whatever.

[00:29:36] I don't know.

[00:29:39] I did the same damn thing.

[00:29:42] Yeah.

[00:29:42] It's like,

[00:29:43] whatever.

[00:29:46] Yeah.

[00:29:46] It's crazy.

[00:29:47] Oh man.

[00:29:49] It's great though.

[00:29:50] I mean,

[00:29:50] I know there's a handful of bands out there that have like punk fiddle

[00:29:54] players or,

[00:29:54] or,

[00:29:55] you know,

[00:29:55] somebody just filling that role,

[00:29:57] but it's kind of a,

[00:29:58] unless it's the Celtic thing,

[00:30:00] which I'm not sure that's where,

[00:30:01] where I saw myself being at right now,

[00:30:04] but yeah,

[00:30:05] there's not a lot of it out there.

[00:30:07] So it's kind of,

[00:30:07] it's kind of fun because somebody always wants to BS with you.

[00:30:10] It's like,

[00:30:10] how the hell did you get into,

[00:30:12] into doing this stuff?

[00:30:13] And I don't know.

[00:30:14] I've all,

[00:30:14] I've always been into punk bands since I was probably 13.

[00:30:18] So I,

[00:30:19] I,

[00:30:20] it's,

[00:30:21] it's weird trying to find my place.

[00:30:24] Yeah.

[00:30:24] Uh,

[00:30:26] cause like I do like that style of punk or whatever you want to call it.

[00:30:31] How did you get introduced to punk rock?

[00:30:34] Uh,

[00:30:35] my brother,

[00:30:35] well,

[00:30:36] one of my brothers.

[00:30:37] Okay.

[00:30:37] It's all,

[00:30:38] it's almost always a sibling.

[00:30:39] It's always a sibling.

[00:30:40] Yeah.

[00:30:41] Well,

[00:30:41] the funny thing is,

[00:30:42] is I used,

[00:30:42] I used to listen to,

[00:30:44] um,

[00:30:45] I'd steal all my older brother's cassettes.

[00:30:47] Uh,

[00:30:48] and,

[00:30:49] um,

[00:30:49] well,

[00:30:49] how did they get into punk rock?

[00:30:51] I have no idea.

[00:30:53] Yeah.

[00:30:54] They were all,

[00:30:55] they were all into,

[00:30:56] well,

[00:30:57] how much older were they than you?

[00:30:59] I'm the baby.

[00:31:00] And my brother that got me into it is six,

[00:31:02] six years older than me.

[00:31:03] He's the one next to me.

[00:31:04] So I was,

[00:31:04] I was the surprise.

[00:31:06] Um,

[00:31:07] but,

[00:31:07] uh,

[00:31:08] he,

[00:31:09] they were,

[00:31:09] they were all into,

[00:31:10] he was listening to Metallica and,

[00:31:13] uh,

[00:31:13] yeah,

[00:31:14] you know,

[00:31:15] the,

[00:31:15] the anthrax was big to him and I,

[00:31:18] um,

[00:31:19] but,

[00:31:19] uh,

[00:31:21] he had,

[00:31:22] um,

[00:31:22] give me convenience or give me death in his cassettes.

[00:31:24] And I listened to that over and over again.

[00:31:26] I could quote all the stupid jello shit,

[00:31:29] like,

[00:31:30] uh,

[00:31:30] on the,

[00:31:31] on the live tracks and the storytelling I can do.

[00:31:33] I mean,

[00:31:34] I listened to those over and over again.

[00:31:36] And,

[00:31:37] uh,

[00:31:37] um,

[00:31:38] like I didn't,

[00:31:39] I,

[00:31:39] he had some stuff that I just didn't realize I was listening to punk music until

[00:31:44] later on.

[00:31:45] And,

[00:31:45] uh,

[00:31:46] and,

[00:31:46] you know,

[00:31:46] and then it turned into shit whenever I was a junior high and he was,

[00:31:52] he was in college and he's bringing home,

[00:31:53] you know,

[00:31:55] uh,

[00:31:55] epitaph and fat stuff and,

[00:31:57] and the catalogs and all that shit and,

[00:31:59] and the compilations and everything.

[00:32:00] So it just kind of snowballed from there that that's,

[00:32:03] that's really where I,

[00:32:04] where I got into that stuff.

[00:32:06] He was bringing home,

[00:32:07] uh,

[00:32:09] he,

[00:32:09] he,

[00:32:09] he brought home,

[00:32:10] um,

[00:32:11] punk and Drupalik and Rance's let's go.

[00:32:14] And he was always his,

[00:32:17] his,

[00:32:17] his favorite,

[00:32:17] his favorites were,

[00:32:19] it was Pennywise.

[00:32:21] So,

[00:32:21] uh,

[00:32:22] like we,

[00:32:23] I don't remember what the hell sparked it,

[00:32:25] but I know the,

[00:32:26] the intro riff to linoleum.

[00:32:28] The first time I heard it,

[00:32:29] I was like,

[00:32:29] what the fuck?

[00:32:31] Like,

[00:32:31] I never heard guitars played like that before.

[00:32:33] Yeah.

[00:32:34] So,

[00:32:35] I mean,

[00:32:35] I,

[00:32:36] I,

[00:32:36] did he play an instrument?

[00:32:38] Your brother?

[00:32:38] He,

[00:32:39] he played guitar a little bit.

[00:32:40] Okay.

[00:32:41] Gotcha.

[00:32:41] Um,

[00:32:43] I'm the only one that ever really played anything seriously.

[00:32:47] Um,

[00:32:48] but he,

[00:32:49] he played some guitar and he,

[00:32:50] he'd play,

[00:32:51] play along with CDs and stuff like that.

[00:32:53] Like we did when we were kids.

[00:32:54] Cool.

[00:32:54] Yeah.

[00:32:54] But,

[00:32:55] uh,

[00:32:55] yeah,

[00:32:55] he would,

[00:32:56] he would bring home some weird stuff and,

[00:32:58] and I'm like,

[00:32:59] what the hell is this?

[00:32:59] And then,

[00:33:00] you know,

[00:33:00] we're going,

[00:33:00] going through all the liner notes and reading all the other bands and shit.

[00:33:03] And it's like,

[00:33:04] it's like started doing all the mail order stuff and,

[00:33:07] and which,

[00:33:08] which was kind of hard to do where I grew up.

[00:33:10] Cause there was,

[00:33:11] there was,

[00:33:12] there was nowhere to buy anything.

[00:33:14] Right.

[00:33:14] So,

[00:33:15] but yeah,

[00:33:16] that's,

[00:33:16] that's kind of where it started.

[00:33:18] And then Columbia house CDs.

[00:33:20] I didn't even do that.

[00:33:25] I didn't even really start going to shows till I was close to 20.

[00:33:29] Okay.

[00:33:30] Yeah.

[00:33:31] Like we just,

[00:33:31] we didn't,

[00:33:32] we didn't go anywhere.

[00:33:33] When,

[00:33:33] when I was growing up,

[00:33:34] you might,

[00:33:35] you might hit the neighboring towns fair,

[00:33:37] but we,

[00:33:38] we didn't,

[00:33:39] we didn't go to the movies.

[00:33:40] We didn't go to sporting events.

[00:33:42] We didn't do shit.

[00:33:43] Right.

[00:33:43] So,

[00:33:44] uh,

[00:33:45] like I,

[00:33:45] I just kind of like took off when I,

[00:33:47] when I had the chance and nothing against my home.

[00:33:51] I,

[00:33:51] I,

[00:33:51] I'd move back home in a heartbeat if I could afford it.

[00:33:54] Yeah.

[00:33:54] But,

[00:33:54] uh,

[00:33:55] but like,

[00:33:56] I just,

[00:33:56] I was like,

[00:33:57] man,

[00:33:57] there's all this shit I want to see and all these bands I want to see.

[00:34:00] And then I started playing shows and then half the time,

[00:34:03] uh,

[00:34:04] opening up for a lot of the bands too.

[00:34:06] So it was like,

[00:34:07] man,

[00:34:08] I just,

[00:34:08] uh,

[00:34:10] took,

[00:34:11] took,

[00:34:11] took a,

[00:34:11] took a weird trip out of my little ass town that like,

[00:34:15] people think that I'm really doing something and I'm not,

[00:34:18] you know what I mean?

[00:34:19] Cause it's just,

[00:34:20] there's just,

[00:34:20] there's just nothing.

[00:34:21] There's just nothing going on there.

[00:34:22] Yeah.

[00:34:23] So,

[00:34:24] yeah.

[00:34:24] Why?

[00:34:25] I mean,

[00:34:25] you are doing something.

[00:34:26] You played fiddle for a lot of fucking people.

[00:34:31] Just band.

[00:34:34] Yeah.

[00:34:35] You know,

[00:34:35] what's funny is the,

[00:34:36] the,

[00:34:37] the country bands.

[00:34:38] Um,

[00:34:40] I,

[00:34:40] I played with,

[00:34:41] I'm for,

[00:34:42] for like 15 years and,

[00:34:43] and still kind of off and on now I played with,

[00:34:45] uh,

[00:34:45] uh,

[00:34:47] Pittsburgh based country band called Nomad.

[00:34:49] And,

[00:34:50] um,

[00:34:50] we played with everybody.

[00:34:52] Uh,

[00:34:53] we,

[00:34:53] we played at Heinz Field with the,

[00:34:55] the,

[00:34:55] the big Kenny Chesney shows.

[00:34:57] And,

[00:34:58] um,

[00:34:59] uh,

[00:35:00] we,

[00:35:00] we did some stuff with,

[00:35:02] with Brad Paisley.

[00:35:03] We were playing in New Jersey.

[00:35:05] Uh,

[00:35:06] we had,

[00:35:07] uh,

[00:35:08] six month residency at casino.

[00:35:10] Like we were just.

[00:35:12] Where?

[00:35:13] Where in Atlantic city?

[00:35:14] Yeah.

[00:35:14] In Atlantic city.

[00:35:15] We were in Bali for six months.

[00:35:17] Yeah.

[00:35:18] and,

[00:35:18] and it was cool.

[00:35:19] Cause we were like employees and we go in there and we,

[00:35:22] uh,

[00:35:22] I'd use the steam shower.

[00:35:24] Uh,

[00:35:26] so if you wanted a massage,

[00:35:28] you had to pay for it,

[00:35:29] but you could use the cafeteria.

[00:35:31] You could use,

[00:35:32] uh,

[00:35:33] any of the spa services that were free.

[00:35:36] And like,

[00:35:37] it was just a vacation every weekend.

[00:35:38] And,

[00:35:39] and we,

[00:35:39] we,

[00:35:40] we,

[00:35:40] we'd end up playing like,

[00:35:41] we'd end up playing like four shows a week and,

[00:35:44] uh,

[00:35:44] end up in Atlantic city and then,

[00:35:46] and then head back home and all,

[00:35:48] everybody's trying to work day jobs at the same damn time.

[00:35:52] And casinos are weird,

[00:35:54] man.

[00:35:54] Like they're really fucking sure.

[00:35:56] There's like,

[00:35:57] like the videos of people coming in off the street,

[00:36:00] doing weird shit.

[00:36:00] That was every week.

[00:36:02] Like we,

[00:36:03] we,

[00:36:04] we'd be,

[00:36:04] we,

[00:36:05] we'd be playing and you'd watch somebody come in the door and they would

[00:36:09] just like hike up their skirt and squat on,

[00:36:12] uh,

[00:36:12] you know,

[00:36:13] a fake,

[00:36:13] a fake plant and take a piss in the middle of the casino.

[00:36:16] Yeah.

[00:36:18] That's so funny.

[00:36:20] There's some weird people.

[00:36:21] And it's,

[00:36:22] and you'd see a lot of these same people every week.

[00:36:24] And it's like,

[00:36:25] Oh my God,

[00:36:25] I don't know how to,

[00:36:26] don't they kick these people?

[00:36:28] That's crazy.

[00:36:30] Not until they give them all their money.

[00:36:32] Yeah.

[00:36:33] But I,

[00:36:34] I played with,

[00:36:35] with,

[00:36:35] um,

[00:36:36] so many,

[00:36:37] uh,

[00:36:38] bigger name country artists and stuff than I ever did with any,

[00:36:40] any,

[00:36:41] uh,

[00:36:41] punk stuff.

[00:36:42] And,

[00:36:43] um,

[00:36:43] it's,

[00:36:44] it's really bizarre.

[00:36:45] Cause I,

[00:36:46] it's,

[00:36:47] it's fun to play in one aspect,

[00:36:49] but it's a job and the other thing too.

[00:36:51] And it's just kind of whatever,

[00:36:53] but I,

[00:36:54] I don't know.

[00:36:54] It's a,

[00:36:55] to like count on one hand,

[00:36:57] how many country bands I've seen over punk bands.

[00:37:02] It's a,

[00:37:02] they're pretty much tied.

[00:37:04] Do I remember correctly?

[00:37:06] And somebody saying something about you sharing the stage with like Garth Brooks or playing fiddle for Garth Brooks at one point?

[00:37:11] Oh no,

[00:37:12] no,

[00:37:13] I,

[00:37:13] uh,

[00:37:14] I think Ryan was probably telling a story last time.

[00:37:18] Uh,

[00:37:19] uh,

[00:37:20] I recorded some stuff for this band in,

[00:37:22] in,

[00:37:23] uh,

[00:37:23] Pittsburgh called,

[00:37:24] uh,

[00:37:24] ghost towns.

[00:37:25] And they're kind of like,

[00:37:27] they're kind of country ish,

[00:37:29] but they're more like a blues rock band.

[00:37:31] And,

[00:37:32] um,

[00:37:33] uh,

[00:37:33] I'm friends with their piano player.

[00:37:34] He has a little home studio.

[00:37:36] I've recorded a lot of stuff with him.

[00:37:37] Joe,

[00:37:37] Joe Monroe.

[00:37:38] He's a great,

[00:37:39] great,

[00:37:39] great person and a musician.

[00:37:42] And,

[00:37:43] um,

[00:37:44] so I went in and I recorded stuff in their studio and they're,

[00:37:47] they're,

[00:37:48] uh,

[00:37:51] he's like,

[00:37:51] you know,

[00:37:52] there,

[00:37:52] there might be some shows coming up.

[00:37:55] Uh,

[00:37:56] I can't really say anything about anything yet.

[00:38:00] And,

[00:38:00] and,

[00:38:00] and like,

[00:38:01] they've already been touring a little bit with the stones.

[00:38:05] Um,

[00:38:06] I don't know how they got into that,

[00:38:07] but like for the last few years,

[00:38:09] they've,

[00:38:09] they've been,

[00:38:09] they've been opening for the Rolling Stones.

[00:38:11] So I was like,

[00:38:12] yeah,

[00:38:13] yeah.

[00:38:13] Give me a call,

[00:38:14] whatever.

[00:38:14] So,

[00:38:15] um,

[00:38:16] and 500 is in Detroit and Grand Rapids.

[00:38:22] And I get a text that says,

[00:38:24] Hey,

[00:38:25] can you be at,

[00:38:27] um,

[00:38:29] I can't,

[00:38:29] I can't think of the stadium.

[00:38:31] There's a stadium in,

[00:38:31] uh,

[00:38:32] Cincinnati,

[00:38:33] uh,

[00:38:34] tomorrow.

[00:38:34] I was like,

[00:38:36] um,

[00:38:36] no,

[00:38:39] he's like,

[00:38:39] um,

[00:38:40] we're,

[00:38:40] we're going to be,

[00:38:41] we're going to be playing with,

[00:38:42] uh,

[00:38:42] Garth Brooks the next few nights.

[00:38:44] Uh,

[00:38:47] I said,

[00:38:47] well,

[00:38:47] I'm,

[00:38:48] I'm,

[00:38:48] I'm already booked.

[00:38:49] I,

[00:38:49] I can't,

[00:38:50] I can't bail on people that fast.

[00:38:53] And,

[00:38:53] uh,

[00:38:54] I'm like,

[00:38:54] I'm,

[00:38:55] I'm in Detroit.

[00:38:56] And he's like,

[00:38:56] can you get to an airport?

[00:38:58] I'm like,

[00:38:58] I can,

[00:38:59] but I can't,

[00:38:59] I can't,

[00:39:00] I can't bail on people like that.

[00:39:01] I won't do that.

[00:39:02] And he said,

[00:39:03] I wouldn't do it either.

[00:39:05] Um,

[00:39:07] so Ryan's like,

[00:39:08] get on the fucking airplane.

[00:39:10] I was like,

[00:39:11] I was like,

[00:39:11] I,

[00:39:12] I can't,

[00:39:13] I can't be that dick and just bail on a show.

[00:39:16] I don't care what it is.

[00:39:17] He's like,

[00:39:19] he's like,

[00:39:20] you're,

[00:39:21] you're,

[00:39:21] you should take that opportunity and do that.

[00:39:23] And I didn't,

[00:39:24] and I,

[00:39:24] I,

[00:39:25] I probably blown a million opportunities planned,

[00:39:27] but,

[00:39:28] uh,

[00:39:29] yeah.

[00:39:29] So I,

[00:39:30] I missed that.

[00:39:31] And then,

[00:39:32] and then like a week later,

[00:39:34] um,

[00:39:35] he says,

[00:39:36] uh,

[00:39:36] or I get a message from their manager.

[00:39:38] He says,

[00:39:38] um,

[00:39:39] can you be in Berlin?

[00:39:42] Can you play in Berlin and Amsterdam next week with the stones?

[00:39:46] And I said,

[00:39:47] well,

[00:39:48] I said,

[00:39:49] my passport expired during COVID and I didn't get it renewed because it was COVID.

[00:39:56] So they're like,

[00:39:57] well,

[00:39:57] how soon can you get it?

[00:39:58] And I said,

[00:39:58] not by next week.

[00:40:01] I don't know.

[00:40:01] I don't know who the hell is going to give you a passport in a week.

[00:40:04] So,

[00:40:05] uh,

[00:40:05] I was like,

[00:40:07] um,

[00:40:08] I'll,

[00:40:08] I'll call around and see what I can do.

[00:40:10] And of course it was a no.

[00:40:11] So I,

[00:40:11] I missed,

[00:40:12] I missed going there.

[00:40:16] And then,

[00:40:16] uh,

[00:40:17] I messaged them.

[00:40:18] Uh,

[00:40:18] I was like,

[00:40:19] Hey,

[00:40:19] my,

[00:40:19] my,

[00:40:20] my passport's renewed,

[00:40:21] you know,

[00:40:22] anything going forward.

[00:40:23] I'm,

[00:40:23] I'm basically open because,

[00:40:25] because 500 was starting to wind down.

[00:40:27] Yeah.

[00:40:27] And,

[00:40:28] uh,

[00:40:28] and they're like,

[00:40:29] I think we found somebody.

[00:40:31] It's like,

[00:40:31] son of a bitch.

[00:40:36] Again,

[00:40:36] not,

[00:40:37] not,

[00:40:37] not completely my style of music or anything.

[00:40:40] It's not bad or anything.

[00:40:41] I,

[00:40:41] I listened to it,

[00:40:42] but,

[00:40:42] uh,

[00:40:43] uh,

[00:40:44] you know,

[00:40:44] and,

[00:40:45] uh,

[00:40:45] I,

[00:40:45] I would sure love to play a few stadiums with the Rolling Stones or something,

[00:40:49] or Garth Brooks.

[00:40:50] And then,

[00:40:51] right.

[00:40:51] I think they did,

[00:40:52] I think they did some stuff in Texas with Luke Bryan or whatever.

[00:40:55] I was like,

[00:40:55] son of a bitch,

[00:40:56] man.

[00:40:57] I just,

[00:40:57] yeah.

[00:40:58] Wow.

[00:41:01] But regardless,

[00:41:03] you know,

[00:41:03] whatever.

[00:41:05] I mean,

[00:41:06] your name's clearly in,

[00:41:08] uh,

[00:41:09] yeah.

[00:41:09] People's ear.

[00:41:11] Yeah.

[00:41:11] I get some messages once in a while.

[00:41:13] It's weird.

[00:41:14] Yeah.

[00:41:15] And then I'm always like,

[00:41:17] you know,

[00:41:19] I,

[00:41:19] the funny thing is it's just asking,

[00:41:23] like I've reached out to people.

[00:41:25] I'm,

[00:41:25] and I'm like,

[00:41:26] Hey,

[00:41:26] I don't,

[00:41:27] you know,

[00:41:29] uh,

[00:41:31] you were posting something about your,

[00:41:33] your next album.

[00:41:33] Like if you,

[00:41:34] if you,

[00:41:34] you have any use for fiddle or something,

[00:41:36] let me know.

[00:41:37] I'm not looking for money.

[00:41:38] Yeah.

[00:41:39] Clearly.

[00:41:41] And,

[00:41:41] uh,

[00:41:42] so,

[00:41:43] uh,

[00:41:44] they'll be like,

[00:41:46] well,

[00:41:46] do you want to play on this?

[00:41:47] Like,

[00:41:48] yeah.

[00:41:48] Well,

[00:41:48] do you want that?

[00:41:50] I'm demoing this and this.

[00:41:51] Do you want to do this?

[00:41:52] Like,

[00:41:52] uh,

[00:41:53] do you know who,

[00:41:54] young governor is?

[00:41:56] He's a,

[00:41:57] uh,

[00:41:58] the singer for a hardcore band out of Toronto called,

[00:42:01] um,

[00:42:01] no warning.

[00:42:03] I've heard of no.

[00:42:04] Um,

[00:42:04] he,

[00:42:05] he also,

[00:42:06] he also played guitar for,

[00:42:08] uh,

[00:42:08] fucked up.

[00:42:09] Uh,

[00:42:10] but he,

[00:42:10] he doesn't anymore,

[00:42:11] but he has a,

[00:42:12] like kind of a,

[00:42:13] a folky rock type project called,

[00:42:16] uh,

[00:42:17] young gov.

[00:42:18] And,

[00:42:18] um,

[00:42:19] I recorded some demos with him just,

[00:42:21] just by reaching out and saying,

[00:42:22] Hey,

[00:42:23] do you,

[00:42:24] you know,

[00:42:24] do you ever want anything?

[00:42:25] Um,

[00:42:26] yeah,

[00:42:26] I,

[00:42:27] I recorded a little bit with,

[00:42:28] uh,

[00:42:29] I recorded a cover song with,

[00:42:31] um,

[00:42:32] uh,

[00:42:32] John Snodgrass.

[00:42:34] And,

[00:42:35] uh,

[00:42:36] I don't,

[00:42:37] I probably can't talk about that because I don't think anything about it's been

[00:42:40] released or not.

[00:42:43] So like,

[00:42:44] I just said,

[00:42:44] reached out and I was like,

[00:42:46] Hey,

[00:42:46] you,

[00:42:46] you want fiddle with something?

[00:42:48] He's like,

[00:42:48] well,

[00:42:49] I'm kind of doing the rock thing right now,

[00:42:51] but,

[00:42:51] uh,

[00:42:51] you want to play,

[00:42:52] you want to play on this,

[00:42:53] uh,

[00:42:53] so-and-so cover.

[00:42:54] I was like,

[00:42:54] Oh yeah.

[00:42:56] So like just asking people,

[00:42:58] you know,

[00:42:59] it's,

[00:43:00] yeah,

[00:43:00] yeah.

[00:43:01] That's like 99% of how I get anything going on.

[00:43:05] And,

[00:43:05] and I just,

[00:43:06] you know,

[00:43:07] I'm not,

[00:43:07] I'm not telling people,

[00:43:08] uh,

[00:43:09] to not throw any money my way,

[00:43:11] but I'm really not looking for money.

[00:43:12] I gotta,

[00:43:13] I,

[00:43:15] I have a day job that lets me do my,

[00:43:17] my,

[00:43:17] my fun project.

[00:43:18] So,

[00:43:19] yeah.

[00:43:21] So the fiddle is basically,

[00:43:23] so it's basically the violin,

[00:43:25] but a certain way that you,

[00:43:26] that you play the violin makes it,

[00:43:29] I don't,

[00:43:30] I don't know how you phrase it because it's basically the same instrument,

[00:43:34] no matter what,

[00:43:36] you know,

[00:43:36] and it is what it is.

[00:43:38] Right.

[00:43:38] When I,

[00:43:38] when I was,

[00:43:39] when I was in college,

[00:43:40] um,

[00:43:41] my strings professor was,

[00:43:42] uh,

[00:43:43] uh,

[00:43:43] from the Ukraine.

[00:43:45] And,

[00:43:45] uh,

[00:43:45] he had this real,

[00:43:46] this real thick,

[00:43:47] thick accent.

[00:43:48] And,

[00:43:49] uh,

[00:43:49] he would,

[00:43:49] he,

[00:43:49] he told me that,

[00:43:51] um,

[00:43:52] when people migrated to the U S and they couldn't read or write,

[00:43:56] and they would write things out,

[00:43:58] uh,

[00:44:00] how people pronounce them.

[00:44:01] So he said,

[00:44:03] um,

[00:44:04] like the,

[00:44:05] the violin,

[00:44:06] the viola,

[00:44:06] cello,

[00:44:07] double bass,

[00:44:07] all that stuff was part of the vial family,

[00:44:10] uh,

[00:44:10] string family.

[00:44:11] And he said,

[00:44:12] so they would say vial.

[00:44:14] And he said,

[00:44:14] the way their accent said it,

[00:44:16] uh,

[00:44:17] as they were saying,

[00:44:18] it sounded like they were saying vital.

[00:44:20] And he said they were,

[00:44:21] they write,

[00:44:22] would write out F I D L E.

[00:44:24] Yeah.

[00:44:24] And,

[00:44:24] uh,

[00:44:24] he said,

[00:44:25] and then,

[00:44:25] you know,

[00:44:26] time progresses and it goes that way.

[00:44:28] But I don't know if that's a true story or not,

[00:44:29] but he's knew a hell of a lot more than I did.

[00:44:32] Okay.

[00:44:33] But yeah,

[00:44:34] I mean,

[00:44:34] it's,

[00:44:35] it's,

[00:44:35] it's the same instrument.

[00:44:37] It just seems to be like people that play classical tend to call it a violin.

[00:44:41] It's almost like,

[00:44:42] it's almost like they're offended if you call it a fiddle.

[00:44:47] Right.

[00:44:47] Yeah.

[00:44:48] Yeah.

[00:44:48] My,

[00:44:48] my,

[00:44:49] my professor was clearly heavily classical trained and,

[00:44:53] and like,

[00:44:54] he was amazing.

[00:44:55] And,

[00:44:55] uh,

[00:44:55] he would always,

[00:44:56] oh,

[00:44:56] my fiddle,

[00:44:57] my fiddle.

[00:44:57] So he didn't,

[00:44:58] he didn't care.

[00:45:00] Right.

[00:45:01] So any,

[00:45:02] and when I did stuff in school,

[00:45:03] I did,

[00:45:05] I did,

[00:45:05] uh,

[00:45:07] classical stuff that him and I worked on,

[00:45:08] but like when it came to doing any kind of a senior recital or anything,

[00:45:12] I said,

[00:45:13] I want,

[00:45:13] I want to,

[00:45:14] I want to play all these like fiddle songs that I learned and have like,

[00:45:17] yeah.

[00:45:18] I,

[00:45:18] cause I first,

[00:45:19] I wasn't an education major,

[00:45:21] so I didn't have to do a recital.

[00:45:24] I opted to do,

[00:45:24] to do that.

[00:45:25] And there was like some pushback because the stuff I wanted to play wasn't stuff

[00:45:29] that I learned,

[00:45:29] uh,

[00:45:30] while in school.

[00:45:31] And he's like,

[00:45:33] everything that him and I worked on is,

[00:45:35] you know,

[00:45:35] has some kind of effect on what he's playing or,

[00:45:38] you know,

[00:45:38] it,

[00:45:38] it,

[00:45:39] it doesn't matter if it's a piece that we studied together,

[00:45:42] uh,

[00:45:43] the,

[00:45:43] everything we've worked on ties over into everything he's going to do going

[00:45:46] forward.

[00:45:47] Yeah.

[00:45:47] And he really,

[00:45:48] he stood up for me.

[00:45:49] And,

[00:45:50] uh,

[00:45:50] so I,

[00:45:51] I did,

[00:45:52] I did like an hour bluegrass show for,

[00:45:54] for my senior recital in college.

[00:45:56] Oh yeah.

[00:45:58] Awesome.

[00:45:59] That's cool.

[00:46:00] Yeah.

[00:46:01] Yeah.

[00:46:01] So it was kind of,

[00:46:02] kind of funny.

[00:46:03] Cause a lot of,

[00:46:03] a lot of the professors that you would think would be kind of like snobby

[00:46:07] classical instructors were like asking me questions about the instruments

[00:46:11] and,

[00:46:11] and,

[00:46:12] uh,

[00:46:12] and song form and everything.

[00:46:13] And I'm like,

[00:46:14] it's really like the most basic shit.

[00:46:16] It's just,

[00:46:16] you play the same thing.

[00:46:18] You played a little bit different the next time.

[00:46:20] Yeah.

[00:46:21] That's awesome.

[00:46:22] So it was,

[00:46:22] it was cool.

[00:46:24] Very cool.

[00:46:25] It's rad to have a professor,

[00:46:28] teacher,

[00:46:29] whatever that like that,

[00:46:30] that stands up for you too.

[00:46:32] Oh yeah,

[00:46:33] he did.

[00:46:33] He,

[00:46:33] he,

[00:46:34] he like stood right up to the other professors.

[00:46:36] They were like,

[00:46:37] you know,

[00:46:37] this doesn't seem like you want to do a recital.

[00:46:39] You want to do like a concert or something.

[00:46:40] And he's like,

[00:46:41] Whoa,

[00:46:41] Whoa,

[00:46:41] Whoa,

[00:46:41] Whoa.

[00:46:41] And,

[00:46:43] and he just like really went to bat for everything that I did.

[00:46:46] And,

[00:46:46] and that's rad as fuck.

[00:46:48] It was funny.

[00:46:49] Cause like what,

[00:46:49] when I,

[00:46:50] when I first started going to school there,

[00:46:51] he was like,

[00:46:52] I heard all these stories are like,

[00:46:54] Oh,

[00:46:54] don't,

[00:46:54] don't bring up any of like the,

[00:46:56] the bluegrass and fiddle stuff because he,

[00:46:59] he's not into that.

[00:47:00] And I was like total crap.

[00:47:02] Cause he was,

[00:47:03] he supported every single thing I did.

[00:47:05] He's like,

[00:47:05] he knew from the start,

[00:47:06] I wasn't there to play classical.

[00:47:08] Nice.

[00:47:09] Yeah.

[00:47:10] That's a great professor.

[00:47:11] That's awesome.

[00:47:11] Yeah.

[00:47:12] Fucking great professor,

[00:47:15] greater friend on top of that.

[00:47:18] Something that says professors can't be your fucking friends,

[00:47:20] you know?

[00:47:21] Right.

[00:47:23] Now we,

[00:47:23] now we,

[00:47:24] now we all drink with our professors nowadays.

[00:47:26] Yeah.

[00:47:27] For good reason too.

[00:47:29] For the most part.

[00:47:30] For the most part.

[00:47:34] All right.

[00:47:34] We're going to ask you,

[00:47:35] we're going to ask you the questions that we ask everybody.

[00:47:37] And we,

[00:47:37] I don't know if we've asked you these before,

[00:47:39] but we're going to do it again.

[00:47:40] And well,

[00:47:41] there's new ones at least.

[00:47:42] it's new.

[00:47:43] It's a new one.

[00:47:43] So yeah.

[00:47:44] Um,

[00:47:45] if you were on death row,

[00:47:46] what would your final meal be?

[00:47:49] Ooh.

[00:47:51] Oh,

[00:47:52] I'm not even creative enough for this.

[00:47:56] You don't have to be creative.

[00:47:58] It's all,

[00:47:58] you know what?

[00:47:59] Mine's McDonald's.

[00:48:00] So,

[00:48:02] well,

[00:48:03] wait,

[00:48:03] what are you,

[00:48:03] what,

[00:48:04] what,

[00:48:04] what are you eating in McDonald's?

[00:48:05] Uh,

[00:48:06] two double cheeseburgers,

[00:48:07] two large fries and a large Coke.

[00:48:09] Ron's,

[00:48:09] Ron's going to eat the shit that put him in the same position.

[00:48:13] Oh yeah.

[00:48:13] Yes.

[00:48:16] Uh,

[00:48:17] there is a,

[00:48:18] um,

[00:48:20] a sub shop by where I grew up called Bob's sub.

[00:48:23] And it is like the most,

[00:48:24] the most,

[00:48:24] uh,

[00:48:26] like people,

[00:48:28] people that went to school there,

[00:48:30] uh,

[00:48:30] they always go back to get these subs and,

[00:48:32] and,

[00:48:32] yeah,

[00:48:33] it is like one,

[00:48:35] one,

[00:48:35] one sandwich shop that people brag about.

[00:48:37] And it's like,

[00:48:38] uh,

[00:48:38] every,

[00:48:39] every white man's dream of just massive amounts of mayonnaise on top of it.

[00:48:48] I'd probably go with that.

[00:48:49] And it'd probably have the same effect.

[00:48:51] Once the,

[00:48:51] once the,

[00:48:52] once the electric chair turns on.

[00:48:54] Yeah.

[00:48:56] What kind of sub,

[00:48:57] what's your,

[00:48:57] what's your,

[00:48:57] what's your,

[00:48:58] what's your sub of choice?

[00:48:59] Uh,

[00:49:00] uh,

[00:49:01] pretty basic.

[00:49:02] Uh,

[00:49:02] it's called,

[00:49:03] uh,

[00:49:03] Bob's delight.

[00:49:04] It's like Capricola and,

[00:49:06] uh,

[00:49:09] you know,

[00:49:09] just Capricola,

[00:49:12] Turkey,

[00:49:13] like bologna.

[00:49:13] Like it's the most basic,

[00:49:15] basic sandwich.

[00:49:16] Yeah.

[00:49:17] The fact that you said Capricola.

[00:49:19] Yeah.

[00:49:19] That's not basic means you're,

[00:49:22] you're talking to the Paisan inside of me.

[00:49:24] Because like,

[00:49:25] I hear you.

[00:49:27] 90% of all people are like,

[00:49:29] what the fuck is Capricola?

[00:49:30] Yeah.

[00:49:31] Yeah.

[00:49:33] I can appreciate a good,

[00:49:34] yeah.

[00:49:35] I have a partial boner right now for the Capricola.

[00:49:37] Yeah.

[00:49:38] That's the most,

[00:49:41] most of the,

[00:49:42] I'm mustard guy.

[00:49:44] I'm,

[00:49:44] I'm mustard over Mayo,

[00:49:45] but whatever.

[00:49:47] Capricola.

[00:49:48] Hmm.

[00:49:49] Yes.

[00:49:49] Yeah.

[00:49:49] But anybody who knows what Capricola is.

[00:49:53] It's like,

[00:49:53] yes.

[00:49:54] Yeah.

[00:49:55] Yeah.

[00:49:56] Because the people that don't know what Capricola is.

[00:49:58] Fuck.

[00:49:59] You don't know what a sandwich is.

[00:50:00] They can go fuck themselves.

[00:50:01] Yeah.

[00:50:02] People who don't know what Capricola is can go to Subway.

[00:50:04] Go fuck themselves.

[00:50:05] That's a made up word.

[00:50:07] Get the fuck out of here.

[00:50:09] They can get a turkey and cheese at Subway.

[00:50:11] Go fuck themselves.

[00:50:11] Yeah.

[00:50:11] Right.

[00:50:14] That's correct.

[00:50:15] That's cool.

[00:50:16] You got a Sub and,

[00:50:17] and Capricola.

[00:50:19] That's great.

[00:50:20] Yeah.

[00:50:22] What is your favorite cereal?

[00:50:25] This is super important.

[00:50:26] This is the most important question you'll ever be asked in your lifetime.

[00:50:29] And we asked it.

[00:50:30] What is your favorite cereal?

[00:50:31] Yep.

[00:50:31] Ron's,

[00:50:32] Ron's run a hundred percent.

[00:50:34] Right.

[00:50:34] Is there a wrong answer?

[00:50:39] I'll let you know.

[00:50:40] I'll let you know.

[00:50:43] My favorite cereal.

[00:50:44] I,

[00:50:45] I would,

[00:50:46] I would say,

[00:50:47] um,

[00:50:48] Raisin Nut Brand.

[00:50:50] Raisin Nut Brand.

[00:50:51] Raisin Nut Brand.

[00:50:52] Interesting.

[00:50:53] Yep.

[00:50:54] Was that the Raisin Brand with the little chunky Krispies?

[00:50:56] It's got the,

[00:50:57] the raisins have the coating on it,

[00:50:59] right?

[00:50:59] Like the.

[00:50:59] Yes.

[00:51:00] Yeah.

[00:51:01] Yeah.

[00:51:01] And it costs like six bucks a box.

[00:51:03] So that's why I never buy it.

[00:51:04] Raisin Nut Brand.

[00:51:05] Okay.

[00:51:06] It probably costs like 20 bucks a box now.

[00:51:09] Yeah.

[00:51:10] Maybe.

[00:51:11] Yeah.

[00:51:11] Yeah.

[00:51:12] Just so you know,

[00:51:13] the correct answer to that question is Fruity Pebbles.

[00:51:16] No.

[00:51:17] No.

[00:51:19] As far as I'm,

[00:51:19] as far as I'm concerned,

[00:51:21] the correct answer to that question is Fruity Pebbles.

[00:51:23] But.

[00:51:23] You'd be,

[00:51:23] you'd be hard pressed to find a cereal I don't like.

[00:51:26] Okay.

[00:51:26] Yeah.

[00:51:26] I'm the same though,

[00:51:29] Luke.

[00:51:30] If you are a Raisin Nut Brand guy,

[00:51:32] you will love my favorite cereal of all time,

[00:51:36] which is Basic Four.

[00:51:38] Oh yeah.

[00:51:39] Basic Four is great.

[00:51:40] What's Basic Four?

[00:51:40] Oh my God.

[00:51:41] Somebody actually knows Basic Four.

[00:51:43] What the fuck is Basic Four?

[00:51:45] It's so good,

[00:51:46] Ron.

[00:51:47] It's so good.

[00:51:48] There's four basic things in it.

[00:51:49] Like what?

[00:51:50] What are the four basic things?

[00:51:51] I'll be the judge of it if it's so good.

[00:51:52] What are the four basic things?

[00:51:53] It's basically cornflakes.

[00:51:56] Yep.

[00:51:57] Okay.

[00:51:57] Rice Krispies.

[00:51:59] All right.

[00:52:00] Uh,

[00:52:00] you get these little like berry,

[00:52:02] they're,

[00:52:03] they're like dried blueberries and they're tiny.

[00:52:05] It's getting worse as it goes along in the.

[00:52:07] Oh no.

[00:52:08] You'd think that until you eat it.

[00:52:09] And it's like,

[00:52:10] this shit shouldn't work together,

[00:52:11] but it does.

[00:52:12] There's like more than four things in it though,

[00:52:14] which is weird why they call it Basic Four.

[00:52:16] I just think it's a bad name.

[00:52:18] Yeah.

[00:52:19] You get these little sweet clustery things.

[00:52:21] And then,

[00:52:23] and then you get,

[00:52:24] uh,

[00:52:24] these little kind of sweet vanilla almond like slices.

[00:52:29] Yeah.

[00:52:30] It's,

[00:52:31] it's really way better than what the name sounds like.

[00:52:34] You just gotta eat it.

[00:52:37] It's so good.

[00:52:39] So basically it is,

[00:52:40] ladies and gentlemen,

[00:52:42] Fruity Pebbles is still the greatest cereal of all time.

[00:52:46] Um,

[00:52:47] we're just like plain food.

[00:52:49] Yeah.

[00:52:49] Cause Fruity Pebbles is,

[00:52:50] it's Fruity and it's Pebbles.

[00:52:52] And that's all you need.

[00:52:53] I don't care about your four fucking,

[00:52:55] whatever the fuck you're talking about.

[00:52:57] I mean,

[00:52:57] Hey,

[00:52:58] you know about the Quaker Oat squares.

[00:53:00] We've had this conversation.

[00:53:01] Those are great,

[00:53:02] but I can't find them anymore.

[00:53:03] Yeah.

[00:53:04] I know.

[00:53:05] Yeah.

[00:53:05] Cracklin O'Brand?

[00:53:07] Cracklin O'Brand is great.

[00:53:08] It's good too.

[00:53:09] That's good stuff too.

[00:53:10] I love Cracklin.

[00:53:11] So Quaker Oat squares are completely different.

[00:53:13] They're fucking amazing.

[00:53:14] And they don't make them anymore.

[00:53:15] I don't think.

[00:53:16] They're not a giant in Maryland.

[00:53:19] So.

[00:53:19] Ron knows about it.

[00:53:21] So judging by my taste in Quaker Oat squares,

[00:53:24] you should just understand that basic four is amazing.

[00:53:28] All right.

[00:53:29] All right.

[00:53:29] All right.

[00:53:30] All right.

[00:53:32] I'm just telling you,

[00:53:33] you just got to try it one time.

[00:53:35] All right.

[00:53:36] So,

[00:53:36] uh,

[00:53:37] next question.

[00:53:38] So which album would you pick?

[00:53:39] If you were going to have your ashes internalized in an album of your choice?

[00:53:44] Hmm.

[00:53:46] Uh,

[00:53:48] I did.

[00:53:48] Somebody's going to spin Luke.

[00:53:50] It's probably,

[00:53:50] it's probably the same.

[00:53:52] Yeah,

[00:53:53] but a different one now,

[00:53:55] but a different one.

[00:53:56] Um,

[00:53:56] I mean,

[00:53:57] it doesn't have to be a different one.

[00:53:58] You can say the same one,

[00:53:59] but yeah,

[00:54:00] I'd,

[00:54:01] I'd probably go back to,

[00:54:02] uh,

[00:54:03] gimme convenience or gimme death.

[00:54:04] Cause that was the first one that really grabbed me.

[00:54:08] But I think last time I said punk and drov look,

[00:54:10] because that was like what,

[00:54:13] what completely immersed me in everything.

[00:54:16] Yeah.

[00:54:17] Yeah.

[00:54:18] Let's go with,

[00:54:18] let's go with dead candidates.

[00:54:20] Cool.

[00:54:20] Sweet.

[00:54:21] Who was on your Mount Rushmore of music?

[00:54:24] My Mount Rushmore of music or my Mount Rushmore of punk music.

[00:54:28] It's up to you.

[00:54:29] Music.

[00:54:30] Yeah.

[00:54:30] Whatever you want to,

[00:54:31] however you want to answer that.

[00:54:32] Five people.

[00:54:33] You get a crazy horse.

[00:54:34] Yeah.

[00:54:34] That's going to be,

[00:54:35] that's going to be weird.

[00:54:37] Um,

[00:54:41] my first love,

[00:54:42] my first love of music was probably credence.

[00:54:44] So I'd say,

[00:54:45] uh,

[00:54:46] John Fogarty.

[00:54:47] Yeah.

[00:54:48] Um,

[00:54:49] I got to throw a fiddle player in there.

[00:54:51] Oh yeah.

[00:54:52] Um,

[00:54:53] there's this Canadian fiddle player.

[00:54:56] Um,

[00:54:58] his name's Lee Cremo.

[00:54:59] He was an Eskimo and,

[00:55:01] uh,

[00:55:02] Cremo spells.

[00:55:03] Yeah.

[00:55:04] C R E M O.

[00:55:05] He's,

[00:55:06] he's long past,

[00:55:07] but,

[00:55:08] uh,

[00:55:08] he,

[00:55:08] he was a Eskimo fiddler from,

[00:55:10] uh,

[00:55:11] New Brunswick.

[00:55:12] And,

[00:55:13] um,

[00:55:14] he was just this funny little Eskimo dude telling hilarious stories and he could fiddle like a motherfucker.

[00:55:23] No shit.

[00:55:23] So I'd put him there.

[00:55:24] dude.

[00:55:25] That's awesome.

[00:55:28] Um,

[00:55:30] uh,

[00:55:30] anything after that for me probably would have been,

[00:55:33] would have,

[00:55:33] would have went straight to punk.

[00:55:34] So I'd probably,

[00:55:36] I'd,

[00:55:36] I'd,

[00:55:38] I'd probably put fat Mike on there.

[00:55:40] Yeah.

[00:55:41] And then probably,

[00:55:43] probably like Bill Stevenson or somebody.

[00:55:45] Yeah.

[00:55:46] How could you not?

[00:55:47] Yeah.

[00:55:47] I,

[00:55:48] there's like so much,

[00:55:49] I don't know how you can ask like,

[00:55:50] Mount Rushmore because there's like,

[00:55:52] uh,

[00:55:53] Joe,

[00:55:53] Joe,

[00:55:54] Joe and Keith Morris.

[00:55:55] And,

[00:55:56] uh,

[00:55:58] I'm not,

[00:55:58] not a huge,

[00:56:00] the biggest fan of Henry Rollins era,

[00:56:02] but I mean,

[00:56:04] you can't,

[00:56:04] can't deny the person,

[00:56:05] uh,

[00:56:06] or the Ramones,

[00:56:07] any for the Ramones.

[00:56:08] Yeah.

[00:56:08] Any,

[00:56:08] all of the Ramones.

[00:56:10] Right.

[00:56:10] And,

[00:56:12] you know,

[00:56:13] whoever he and Mackay,

[00:56:14] Jesus.

[00:56:15] Yeah.

[00:56:16] HR like,

[00:56:17] right.

[00:56:18] HR.

[00:56:20] Yeah.

[00:56:21] Yeah.

[00:56:22] I don't,

[00:56:22] it's,

[00:56:22] it's,

[00:56:22] it's weird because,

[00:56:24] uh,

[00:56:24] there's,

[00:56:24] there's so many,

[00:56:25] so many influential people.

[00:56:27] It's insane.

[00:56:28] Yeah.

[00:56:29] Yeah.

[00:56:31] Those are the,

[00:56:32] I think fat Mike is a necessity.

[00:56:34] Yeah.

[00:56:35] Fat Mike is a necessity.

[00:56:36] He's done so much.

[00:56:37] Yeah.

[00:56:38] Yeah.

[00:56:38] I mean,

[00:56:38] not just no effects,

[00:56:39] but like,

[00:56:40] yeah.

[00:56:42] For any of the descendants.

[00:56:44] Yeah.

[00:56:45] For real.

[00:56:45] Like Milo or fucking bill.

[00:56:48] Like any of,

[00:56:49] any of the,

[00:56:50] like anybody who played on Milo goes to college.

[00:56:52] Like,

[00:56:52] yeah,

[00:56:53] that was,

[00:56:54] that,

[00:56:54] that record was so fucking far ahead of its time.

[00:56:57] It's not even fucking funny.

[00:56:59] Well,

[00:57:00] I,

[00:57:00] I,

[00:57:00] I,

[00:57:01] I think it's insane.

[00:57:02] Like they had two different dudes playing guitar and bass on that album.

[00:57:06] And it's like,

[00:57:07] you're replacing with Carl and Stefan and you just don't have the same amazing.

[00:57:11] It's wild.

[00:57:13] It's like nothing changed.

[00:57:15] And,

[00:57:15] and their,

[00:57:16] and their originals going forward are descendants songs.

[00:57:19] It's nothing changed.

[00:57:21] It's incredible.

[00:57:22] It is incredible.

[00:57:23] Yeah.

[00:57:24] Yeah.

[00:57:24] It's wild.

[00:57:25] Awesome.

[00:57:26] Luke.

[00:57:26] Thank you so much,

[00:57:27] dude.

[00:57:27] Yeah.

[00:57:27] Thanks dude.

[00:57:28] Yeah.

[00:57:29] We'll be in touch and I'll let you know when this will come out.

[00:57:31] Probably two weeks.

[00:57:32] Um,

[00:57:33] but I'll let you know.

[00:57:33] I'll keep you posted.

[00:57:35] All right,

[00:57:35] man.

[00:57:36] All right,

[00:57:36] man.

[00:57:36] Thank you so much.

[00:57:37] Appreciate you guys.

[00:57:38] Hell yeah.

[00:57:39] Later dude.

[00:57:39] Right back at you,

[00:57:40] dude.

[00:57:41] Thank you so much.

[00:57:42] All right.

[00:57:42] Yeah.

[00:57:42] All right.

[00:57:44] Take care.

[00:57:45] Bye.

[00:57:53] How do I do this shit?

[00:57:54] I can still hear you.

[00:57:56] Uh,

[00:57:57] so what,

[00:57:57] what do I have to press?

[00:57:59] Close.

[00:58:00] Close.

[00:58:00] I wonder if you have been in touch and it's okay?

[00:58:01] Mm-hmm.

[00:58:01] Yeah.
